Developing sustainable persistence, Chia Hsin Foundation held the first awards ceremony after the pandemic.

After two years of waiting, Chia Hsin Foundation held the joint awards ceremony of “The 64th Chia Hsin Scholarship”, “The 59th Chia Hsin Sports Scholarship”, and “The 2nd Sustainability Scholarship” at the Gala de Chine hotel, New Taipei city in the morning of August 27. In the ceremony, a total of 538 students are awarded and up to 891 million NT$ are funded. Remarkably, This year is the first time to award “Sustainability Scholarship” in person to encourage the influential undergraduate and graduate students equipped with innovative perspectives and dedicated to sustainable activities. The foundation keeps cultivating these talented learners and taking practical actions to support sustainable development.

Chia Hsin Foundation is the earliest scholarship-oriented foundation established in 1963 by Mr. Min-Yu Chang, the founder of Chia Hsin Cement Corporation. Starting from educational culture, the foundation has been committed to talent inspiration, caring for the underprivileged, and humanities promotion. Recently, it even spared no effort supporting start-ups, providing financial aids to rural education, promoting culture and so on. Faced with reconstruction of new era in 2022, the foundation takes a further step to initiate “Sustainability Scholarship” program and render the opportunity of exam-free admission to “Epoch School empowerment plan” to the awardees, which urges the juveniles to explore  and create the harmonious relation between human and nature, as well as human and society. Mr. Kang-Lung Chang, the chairman of the foundation indicates that there are various creative viewpoints and projects in the submissions of  “Sustainability Scholarship”, especially delighted that many students have already launched proactive actions for human sustainability.

“Persistence” is a spirit of keeping consistent endeavor and improvement that foundation and the awardees put into practice together. Therefore, the Chia Hsin Foundation award ceremony this year is featured with “persistence” to praise one’s endurance. However, sustainable development is a long-term assignment covered with many aspects and requires students to develop persistent spirit to push and practice. In the ceremony, the awardees showed their persistence by sharing their own experiences that they overcame obstacles with endeavor and encouragement when pursuing their goals. They encouraged each other to break through the uncertainties in the pandemic.

Mr. Chang, the chairman of the foundation and Ms. Ming-Shih Yin, the director of the foundation, both emphasized that persistence is the critical element to success and self-realization. Meanwhile, the research of Angela Duckworth, a well-known American psychologist was mentioned to justify that “persistence” can be more suitable than intelligence or talent to predict whether one can succeed in the future. Mr. Chang and Ms. Yin also appealed to the students that no matter how tough the situation would be, they should never lose their initial dream to face the challenges with persistence.

It has been about 70 years for the Chia Hsin Foundation to subsidize over 90,000 students. It puts persistence into practice, continuously provides scholarship to cultivate talents, helps people in need, with heavy injuries or physically and mentally underprivileged, and also assists the athletes to pursue higher goals. The foundation has adhered to the faith “Taken from the community, giving back to society.” inheriting from Mr. Min-Yu Chang, the founder of Chia Hsin Cement Corporation, anticipating that the awardees will endeavor to give the feedback to the society and jointly usher in a better world in the future.
